New Arrival

Massimo just born (day 2)Massimo (Max) David Hope-Mason …. was born on Friday 31st January 2003 at 9.55 am weighing 1.556 kilos (3 lbs 6 oz) – his gestational age was 32 weeks and 2 day – so 8 weeks early. He is in St George’s neonatal unit, which is the best in the South East and is being well looked after.

He has a blockage or narrowing in his windpipe below his voice box which is causing concern. Originally they could not insert a tube into his lungs in order to assist his breathing, however on Saturday afternoon, they managed to get a very small tube beyond the blockage. This procedure took 2 and a half hours, at some stage during which Max required heart massage. Things were very touch and go and Max suffered quite a lot. The tube is smaller than they would like and is liable to block easily with secretions and blood. The nurses have been clearing it every half hour and now every hour to ensure that Max can continue to breathe. He is now stable although not yet out of danger and we are hoping that the Paediatric ENT specialist will see him in the next few days and that we/they can form a plan of action.

We will try to keep you informed by email with what is going on, meanwhile J and I will be spending as much time in hospital as possible.
